Oral and maxillofacial surgery deals with the procedures required to restore and maintain complete oral health.The majority of surgery is performed in the day procedure units and most patients are discharged between two to four days after surgery.

On arrival, patients receive a pre-operative instruction sheet explaining their procedure and on discharge. After surgery, patients recuperate in the recovery area for a minimum of 30 minutes, depending on a patient's reactions to the anaesthetic drugs and surgical procedure. Once this phase is complete, the patient is then transferred back to their room.

Detailed information regarding what patients are to expect within the initial two to three weeks after surgery are provided by their individual surgeon. This information covers many topics including:

• swelling,
• bruising,
• pain,
• stitches,
• oral hygiene,
• drains,
• bleeding, and
• nausea

Your surgeon and anaesthetist prescribe appropriate medications while in hospital and following discharge. A soft guideline is also provided, with suggestions of some suitable foods for this period.
