The VPSU has established a national and international reputation for reconstructive and cosmetic plastic surgery expertise. The service is renowned for the expertise of a large number of plastic surgeons, theatre technicians and using staff who are committed to providing the best of experiences for all our patients.
Sir Benjamin Rank founded the Victorian Plastic Surgery Unit (VPSU) in 1963 at its original site at Preston and Northcote Community Hospital (PANCH). When PANCH was closed in 1998, the unit moved to Mercy Private.
The VPSE continues the tradition of education by providing an accredited Surgical Registrar training position and a Division 1 post registration nursing course in plastics and reconstructive surgery course conducted in affiliation with Australian Catholic University.
The breast unit was established on site at Mercy Private in 2000 by Suzanne Neal as a centre of excellence in the care of patients with breast disorders. This is a total care facility.
Located within the consulting rooms are diagnostic facilities including:
• X-Ray
• Pathology
• Specialist surgeons
• Specialist physician
• Oncologists
• Breast care nurses
• Psychologist
• Physiotherapist
Within the hospital, the ward is fully renovated with single and shared accommodation available. This is shared with VPSU, and reconstructive breast surgery is available in the one area. Oncology is also managed from this area.
