The Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliary care centre is a 29 bed highly specialised unit that offers services including gastroenterolgy, colorectal, hepatobiliary and general surgery using a team of specialist doctors, nurses and allied health professionals. We have a resident doctor appointed to this unit who can liaise with your specialist to make sure you get optimal care. In addition, many of our surgeons have consulting suites on campus.
We also offer the services of a full time Stomal Therapist, a specialist nurse who is trained to address the physical and emotional needs of people whose surgery results in the formation of a stoma.

Our stomal therapy department provides specialised care to people with stomas.
What is a “stoma”?
A stoma is a surgically created opening from either the bladder or bowel onto the abdomen. This provides an exit point for the body waste products; urine or faeces.
What is a Stomal Therapist?
Our Stomal Therapist is a specialist nurse trained to address the physical and emotional needs of people who require surgery, which then requires the formation of a stoma.
Pre admission consultation
This will help ensure that you and your family have a full understanding of the surgery and realistic plans for discharge.
Management of a stoma
After your operation, the Stomal Therapist will teach you how to care for your stoma. A suitable appliance (bag) will be chosen and you will become a member of an ostomy association. The cost of stoma appliances is fully subsidised by the Federal Government.
Outpatient services
Follow-up appointments are available upon discharge with ongoing support.
