Cardiac Diagnostic Unit
Qualified experienced cardiac technologists can perform a range of cardiac diagnostic tests in this unit, including:
- transthoracic echocardiograms,
- tran oesophageal echocardiograms, and
- exercise and dobutamine stress echocardiography.
Cardiac Catheter laboratory
Our state-of-the-art cardiac catheter laboratories are leading the way in diagnostic and interventional cardiology. There is a dedicated team of cardiologists that operates from the St Vincents campus, that are able to provide treatment for single or multiple lesions within the coronary arteries.
Procedures performed in the cardiac catheter laboratory are:
- coronary angiogram and right heart study,
- percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA),
- coronary stent insertion,
- rotablator,
- pacemaker insertion,
- intra-aortic balloon pump insertion, and
- atrial-septal defect percutaneous repair.
Cardiac Surgery
A team of highly experienced theatre nurses and prefusionists staffs our cardiac operating theatre. It also has state-of-art computerised monitoring and perfusion equipment and the latest echocardiography machine.
Our cardiac surgeons are on the leading edge of cardiac medicine and offer the complete spectrum of surgical intervention for acquired and congenital adult cardiac disorders. They have a breadth of expertise in coronary artery bypass surgery, off pump coronary revascularisations, valve repairing / conserving surgery, aortic homografts, and surgery for cardiac arrhythmias, in particular, atrial fibrillation.
Our cardiac anaesthetists also offer an excellent intraoperative transoesophageal echocardiography service, which ensures optimal surgical outcome especially for the more complex procedures. Autologous blood donation used intraoperatively whenever appropriate also minimises the blood transfusion requirements from other donors.
Cardiac unit
We have a purpose built unit equipped to provide complex invasive cardiovascular monitoring for general and ambulatory cardiac monitoring.
Intensive care unit
Our intensive care unit provides care of the highest standards for critically ill patients. It also accommodates patients after open heart surgery.
Vascular services
In addition to conventional vascular surgery performed in the main operating theatre, vascular surgeons, radiologists, cardiologists and other related specialists have the opportunity to perform studies and interventions in all parts of the vascular tree by using the latest technology in the endo-vascular suite. This state-of-the–art unit was the first model of its kind in Victoria and is designed to cope with the requirements of modern angiography.
