Midwifery Education Programs

Midwifery Graduate Diploma –Employment Model

This program provides the clinical component of the Midwifery Graduate Diploma and operates in conjunction with approved universities.

Employment commences in March each year.

The midwifery student will undertake all the Clinical hours required to meet NBV requirements to register as a midwife

Requirements to enter program:

  • Bachelor of Nursing
  • Registered Victorian Nurses Board

Structure of Employment Model:

  • Theoretical component conducted at University of choice
  • Clinical component at St Vincents & Mercy Private Comprising six (6) days per fortnight [7.5 hrs per shift]
  • Five (5) paid shifts and one (1) unpaid

Unpaid hours allocated to:

  • Antenatal classes, Breastfeeding Centre, Domiciliary, Ante-Postnatal visits at VMP rooms
  • Antenatal Assessment Clinic (OR)
  • Unpaid Clinical Practice in allocated ward area

Rotations include:

  • Delivery Suite
  • Pre & Post Natal
  • Level 2 Special Care Nursery

Clinical hours are allocated to meet NBV requirements to register as a midwife Post Graduate Scholarships:

Scholarships are available to the Midwifery Graduate Diploma student

 

 

Midwifery Graduate Program

This program is available to Midwifery Graduates who have completed a

  • Double Degree – Bachelor of Midwifery / Bachelor of Nursing
  • Bachelor of Midwifery
  • Graduate Diploma of Midwifery

and are ready to consolidate their Midwifery skills with the support of a dedicated team of Midwifery educators.

Commencement dates are February, April and July each year.

Rotations:

Double Degree Graduates

Rotations include:

  • Four (4) months General Ward
  • Four (4) months Delivery Suite
  • Three (3) months Pre & Post Natal
  • One (1) month Level 2 Special Care Nursery

Bachelor of Midwifery and Graduate Diploma of Midwifery

Rotations include:

  • Four (4) months Delivery Suite
  • Four & a half (4.5) months Pre & Post Natal
  • Three (3) months Level 2 Special Care Nursery

Study Days:

Midwifery Graduates attend four (4) paid study days during the program

Please note that St Vincents & Mercy Private Midwifery Graduate program is not part of Computer Match, and as such applications should be made directly to St Vincents & Mercy Private Hospital.

 

 

Return to Practice Course for Division 1 nurses with lapse in Midwifery qualification and Initial Registration (overseas nurse) in Division1 on the basis of Midwifery qualification

This Nurses Board Victoria approved Course is structured for registered nurses in Division 1 with lapsed midwifery qualifications that have not practiced as midwives for the last five years or more and are required to undertake return to practice program. It is also structured for overseas midwives that are looking for Initial Registration in Victoria.

Requirements: of the program are:

  • Division 1 Registered Nurse who is eligible to apply according to Nurses Board of Victoria Criteria
  • Approval Letter from Nurses Board of Victoria

Course Outline:

The return to practice or Initial registration participant will be supported by an experienced and dedicated team of Midwifery Educators. The course is undertaken in all areas of the Midwifery Unit. After an initial full-time orientation/theory period of eighty (80) hours two (2) weeks the rest of the program is undertaken clinically over a period of four hundred (400) hours part-time at 30 hours per week.

Participants are paid whilst undertaking this Program.

Study Block 2 weeks:

During this time, lectures are provided on a range of clinical and theoretical midwifery issues and on completion of theory a written assessment will take place.

  • Level 2 Special Care Nursery
